Angela's Story
Life
Moved to Isle of Palms from West Ashley after graduation when my mother remarried (second time). Met my husband at Isle of Palms Red and White, I was a cashier, he the produce manager. Got married in spring of 1984, and moved to Mt. Pleasant, had our one and only daughter, in 1986. Visited Faison, NC (my husband's last name--and now, mine too--)for a couple of years, the folks here were very nice and accommodating of my husband's rich heritage. We moved here in 1994, (I think!?). First lived in town over a little corner grocery store (was the first Bloomingdales, so the history goes!) for a year before buying a historic home built in 1880. It's about 3,800 sq. ft. with a huge L-shaped porch, French doors and hardwood floors. It would be to die for in Charleston, but valued very low in a rural farming community of 750 population. Very quaint town trying to get with the times in past couple of years. The downtown is about two blocks long, what was Cates Pickles is about two blocks away and Cottle Strawberry Farm is about a mile out of town. We are about 3 miles from I-40 and smack between Raleigh and Wilmington--The area is ripe for growth! There is a Piggly Wiggly a few blocks from my house (my husband Rob manages it) and at least 1/2 dozen churches, three convenience stores, two florists, an uptown salon and day spa, gift shop, barber and Hispanic grocery and hair cutteries, laundry mat and dry cleaners, a relatively new "high-end" restaraunt, an arts company (my daughter took dance, drama and voice there before college--it's new too) Lots of trucking, hog and turkey farms in area (pee-wehew!) We even have a fish breeding nursery a few miles away...Expand for more
. The volunteer fire and rescue people here are top-notch, if you don't mind air sirens at any time, day or night. And the train tracks (and the one stop light in town) is two blocks away from home too. Park behind house, great area for walking. School is small, and about 1/3 white, 1/3 black and 1/3 Hispanic and good Christian kids (most of them anyway). This town is an undiscovered jewel--Like a real Mayberry RFD, which is not so many hours away (Mt. Airy, NC) but is much larger than Faison. Mount Olive Pickle is only 9 miles away and many, historic big homes at great prices. Good thing--everyone knows his neighbor, bad thing--everyone knows his neighbor (gossip mecca!)
I guess like they say in the old Cates Pickles add, "We make the best pickles, cause there isn't anything else to do!" The nearest large town is Goldsboro the home of SeymoreJohnson Airforce Base is 30 miles away, Clinton--which packs Lundy's pork products and has a Wal-Mart (like Goldsboro) is 15 miles away. Mount Olive College (formerly Baptist based school) is there too. A new Wal-mart opened about a year ago, about 10 miles awayÂWE'RE MOVING UP!!!
If you want to buy a historic home cheap?? As is. Needs work (new heat/ac/ductwork/insulating mainly and repainting) on 1/2 acre lot downtown near Civil War monument. I work for small newspaper in next town and cover town meetings.
Most recently, my mother died, my stepfather died, my husband's brother and father died, and a coworker (all but one of cancer). So been making a lot of trips back home for over 9 months, trying to finish up Snee Farms Lake Condo for sale 3BR, 3BA. Was husband's dad's--just about new everything! (12/07).
